I was never a fan of foundation until I got a make-over at Smashbox last month. The make-up artist Nicole took my non-love of foundation into consideration & introduced me to Tinted Moisturizer. What’s the difference between the two you ask? Well here’s the answer. New York City based make-up artist B.J. Gillian says, “think of them in the same terms as lip gloss vs. lipstick–one’s sheer, the other’s more serious. A tinted moisturizer is a face lotion with a hint of color that evens out tone but still lets skin show through–as lip gloss does. Foundation though, like lipstick, has more pigment & allows for an opaque “done” effect.” Do you need both? Not according to Gillian who says, “The one you need depends on how much coverage you want.”
So if your complexion is clear but you want to even out your skin tone, then tinted moisturizer is your best bet. Try Smashbox’s Sheer Focus Tinted Moisturizer, $30, which is what I use. If you’re looking to camouflage acne scars or pigmentation problems, then opt for a full-coverage foundation. You can try CoverGirl Queen Collection Foundation, $7.49.
