Deréon Jewelry + On the Lookout + Carlos Campos Show to be All-Black

* Beyoncé along with her mother, Tina Knowles, are venturing into the jewelry business. They plan to expand their 2 yr. old label Deréon by adding a fashion jewelry line. It will include edgy, black leather cuffs, as well as charm bracelets & hoop earrings, in metal, glass, & enamel. Retailing from $16 to $68, the collection will be sold in Macy’s & Dillard’s stores around Spring ’09. [via WWD]

* And that means I will be on the lookout for Black models on the runways. I am praying for better representation this year. I will definitely be in search of these 3 ladies below: (Click their names to see more pics)

Sessilee Lopez
This Philly native has been modeling since 2004, but got
thrust into the spotlight after being featured in Italian
Vogue’s recent all-black issue.

Arlenis Sosa
This face is definitely one to watch. Only 2 weeks after
signing with Marilyn agency in March, she shot for
both Vogue & Italian Vogue. Oscar de la Renta also
snatched her up for his resort show.

Lakshmi Menon
Even after replacing another model as the face of
Hermès, Menon still didn’t take off in NY last
season. But she finally got her turn when she
openened Givenchy’s fall couture show in July.

* Menswear designer Carlos Campos announced that for the showing of his first women’s collection during Fashion Week, he’ll only be using Black models. He says supermodel Iman inspired the casting decision & described the collection as, “Jet set rockstar–think David Bowie & Iman on holiday in the South of France.” I’m all for more diversity on the runways, but not if it’s just going to be used as a publicity stunt & that’s exactly what I think this is. The point is to be conscious that Black men & women are not valued in the fashion industry, as much as, well, “European” men & women are. I guess I’ll accept what he’s trying to do, but I just hope that the industry opens their eyes to putting more color on the runways. [via NY Observer]
